This list is based on OS X 10.3.2 (Panther).

User Interface

Windows XP does some of these things just fine.

  • Resize window from any border or corner. How can they even sell a desktop that allows resizing only from the lower-right corner without being embarrassed?
  • Automatic window tiling (seems to be the application's responsibility).
  • Open JBuilder by double-clicking project in Finder.
  • Down arrow cycles around to beginning of menu.
  • Generic shortcuts for menu items and general navigation of UI elements.
  • Seamless integration of Favorites between Aqua and Unix (Unix thinks the Favorites are empty files). This is a general UI-shell integration problem.
  • Seamless interaction between Unix and Aqua with respect to line separators. Example: I saved a Unix patch file using IE. The patch program thought it was garbage until I converted the line separators from Mac to Unix.
  • ...

Software

  • KaZaALite
  • Free OCR software (there might be something for X11)
  • Mobile device emulators (Nokia, Qualcomm, etc.)
  • Working Palm Expense conduit
  • ...

Fulfilled Wishes

  • One-step "open with" (easy way to choose app to open document instead of Show info > Open with application and then Open): Zingg! takes care of this.
  • Automatic power mgmt depending on power source (plugged in vs. battery)
  • Dragging docs into Emacs.
  • Terminal window here (in some folder).
  • eFax Messenger
